Promoting a healthy lifestyle by supporting sport. Aceites Abril allocates part of its marketing budget to sponsoring sports teams in the younger categories, with the number currently standing at 250 sports teams throughout Galicia, accounting for a total of 4,000 boys and girls aged between 4 and 16.

Galicia’s gastronomy is very well-rounded, and is especially noted for the quality of its raw materials. As a Galician company, Aceites Abril has an obligation to contribute to the promotion of Galician gastronomy, supporting local gastronomic festivals and championing the benefits of the Atlantic diet.

For some years, Aceites Abril has supported and promoted the olive plantations in the provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra, which together with a few areas in the south of the province of Lugo, are the best locations for growing olives in Galicia. The most important challenge facing this project was to adapt the specific features of olive growing to the Galician terrain, where the land has been divided into numerous smallholdings that make it difficult to make the process as profitable as the large-scale traditional olive plantations found in other parts of Spain.

Following extensive research, the result has been super intensive exploitation focusing on the Arbequina variety. This bushy olive variety, originally from Lleida, can be planted as hedges, making it possible to start production on small plots with the necessary microclimate. This variety also matures quickly, providing the first harvests within 3 - 5 years.

The project to support new olive plantations has been welcomed by farmers, who have been helped by the Ourense-based company with the provision of technical advice and specific training services.

In 2013 they supplied the first 2000 litres of “home-grown” oil, and by the end of 2014 Aceites Abril began to sell oil obtained exclusively from Galician olives.

Olive plantations have proved to be an alternative way of making use of previously non-productive land, in the same way as other crops that were found to be equally suitable for Galicia’s climate and geography and which are now a symbol of our agriculture, such as vines.

In Galicia, with the return of this type of crop, varieties have been selected that offer solid guarantees. Varieties such as Arbequina or Picual are offering excellent results, as they are more resistant to freezing, blight and diseases.
